Tenzan Tōjikyō – Kayoi Tōji Ikkyū

A connoisseur’s bathhouse where the water is the star

Ikkyu is the bathing-only building on the Tenzan Tojikyo grounds. Unlike the main Tenzan with its lounges and restaurants, it is stripped down to the bath itself: a house of ancient cypress with changing area and bath in a single room, old-communal-bath style, and no indoor tub — everything is open-air. The men’s side is airy with breezes off the Sukumo River gorge; the women’s side faces a waterfall. It is ¥100 cheaper and quieter than Tenzan, and a ¥300 add-on lets you use both.

Tips & cautions

- Closed Thursdays (Tenzan itself is open daily); also ~5 days in mid-December.

- No indoor bath, so moving between tubs is cold in winter or rain.

- Changing area and bath share one room — keep belongings dry; valuables in the front-desk lockers.

- It is in Oku-Yumoto, ~25 min uphill on foot from the station; the ryokan-association loop bus (route B, paid) or a taxi is easier.

- Tenzan next door has restaurants and rest areas — combine with the ¥300 ticket for a full day.

Getting there

From Hakone-Yumoto Station, ryokan-association loop bus ~10 min to “Tenzan Tojikyo”, or Hakone Tozan bus to “Oku-Yumoto Iriguchi” then 2 min on foot. By car ~3 min from Sukumogawa IC.
