Three minutes from Hakone-Yumoto: a farmhouse-style mountain onsen
Hakone Yuryo, themed as a “farmhouse-style satoyama onsen”, is a day-use facility in the hills behind Hakone-Yumoto Station (Tonosawa). A free shuttle runs from the station about every 20 minutes, making it one of the easiest stops at the end of a Hakone day. The main bathhouse has rock rotenburo beside a murmuring stream, Shigaraki-pottery pot baths, saunas with aromatic aufguss sessions and a natural cold plunge. The annex “Kaden” offers 19 private open-air rooms — the most in the Tokyo region — ideal for families with small children or couples wanting privacy. The restaurant serves irori hearth cuisine.
Tips & cautions
- Walking is possible (5 min from Tonosawa Station) but steep — take the shuttle from the stop in front of Hakone-Yumoto Station.
- No towel rental; bring or buy one. Cards and QR payment accepted.
- Private rooms sell out early on weekends and holidays — book on the official site.
- Aufguss times are irregular; check on arrival.
- Leave large suitcases in station lockers.
Getting there
Free shuttle ~3 min from Hakone-Yumoto Station (about every 20 min), or 5 min on foot from Tonosawa Station. By car: ~10 min from Hakoneguchi IC, ~45 min from Gotemba IC.

Five minutes by shuttle from Hakone-Yumoto Station, a day-use-only bathhouse in the hills along the Sukumo River. Terraced rock rotenburo, a cave bath and a lukewarm pool invite long soaks. No reservation needed; rest rooms, restaurants and a reading lounge make it easy to stay half a day. Tattoos not permitted.
Hakone Kowakien Yunessun
Two halves: the swimsuit spa zone 'Yunessun' and the traditional nude 'Mori no Yu'. Wine baths, coffee baths and water slides make it family-friendly and an easy first onsen for visitors. Tattoos allowed if covered with a sticker. Dynamic pricing in 2026: passport (both zones) from ¥3,500, swimsuit zone from ¥2,500, Mori no Yu only from ¥1,500.
Hakone-Yumoto Tenseien (day use)
A large day-spa 12 minutes from Hakone-Yumoto Station, open 23 hours (10 am to 9 am). A 17-metre rooftop open-air bath, garden waterfalls and private baths. Overnight stays cost extra.
