A swimsuit onsen theme park plus a real onsen
Opened in 2001 (25th anniversary in 2026), Yunessun in Kowakudani is a big onsen theme park in two zones. “Yunessun” is the swimsuit zone: the Mediterranean-style “Aegean Sea of the Gods” main spa, a wine bath where real red wine is poured from a 3.6 m bottle two or three times a day, coffee and green-tea baths, a 40 m panoramic rotenburo and the “Rockies Splash” water slide (height 105 cm+). “Mori-no-yu” is the gender-separated nude onsen with Japanese-garden rotenburo and a collagen bath (women’s), renovated in March 2025. The zones connect indoors, so you can walk between them in swimwear.
Tips & cautions
- Prices change by date and peak days may require reservations; buying on the official site saves up to ¥400.
- Frequent time-based deals: “Afternoon Pass” after 13:00, summer “Late Pass” after 17:00 (¥1,200 adults in 2025).
- Swimsuit required (rentals available); no swim cap needed. Check tattoo policy beforehand.
- Last entry one hour before closing.
- Buffet and Italian restaurants need no entry ticket; a food court serves guests in swimwear.
Getting there
From Hakone-Yumoto Station, Hakone Tozan bus (H line toward Togendai) ~20 min to “Kowakien”, right at the stop. About 20 min on foot from Kowakidani Station. By car ~30 min from Hakoneguchi IC.

Tenzan Tohji-kyo
Five minutes by shuttle from Hakone-Yumoto Station, a day-use-only bathhouse in the hills along the Sukumo River. Terraced rock rotenburo, a cave bath and a lukewarm pool invite long soaks. No reservation needed; rest rooms, restaurants and a reading lounge make it easy to stay half a day. Tattoos not permitted.
Hakone Yuryo
Three minutes by free shuttle from Hakone-Yumoto. A farmhouse-style day spa whose 19 private open-air rooms are the draw (reserve ahead). The löyly sauna sessions in the main bath are popular too.
Hakone-Yumoto Tenseien (day use)
A large day-spa 12 minutes from Hakone-Yumoto Station, open 23 hours (10 am to 9 am). A 17-metre rooftop open-air bath, garden waterfalls and private baths. Overnight stays cost extra.
