Hakone’s first 23-hour onsen
Tenseien is the largest ryokan in Hakone-Yumoto and the only place in Hakone taking day bathers for 23 hours, from 10 a.m. to 9 a.m. the next day. Four private springs on site feed the rooftop “Tenku” open-air bath (~17 m) with views of the Hakone mountains through the night; travellers who miss the last train sometimes spend the night in the tatami hall. The garden has the 11-m-wide Tamadare Falls and a branch of Hakone Shrine, a pleasant stroll before or after your soak.
Tips & cautions
- Beyond the basic 5 hours it is ¥100 per 30 min, plus a late-night surcharge after midnight — using it as lodging costs adults roughly ¥4,400+.
- Advance tickets (Odakyu Travel, Asoview) are ¥500–600 cheaper than the ¥2,730 gate price; meal + rest-hall sets exist.
- The rooftop bath is exhilarating but cold to reach in winter and sunny at midday.
- Some plans exclude towels and loungewear — check when buying.
- Very crowded on weekend afternoons; evenings and early mornings are quieter.
Getting there
About 12 min on foot from Hakone-Yumoto Station (gentle climb along the Sukumo River) or ryokan loop bus route A ~5 min to “Tenseien”. By car ~5 min from Sukumogawa IC; free parking.

- Tattoos are explicitly not allowed, even if covered.
- Ryokan day-use hours are limited and may be suspended in peak season — phone the same morning.
- Last entry is 30–60 minutes before closing.

Five minutes by shuttle from Hakone-Yumoto Station, a day-use-only bathhouse in the hills along the Sukumo River. Terraced rock rotenburo, a cave bath and a lukewarm pool invite long soaks. No reservation needed; rest rooms, restaurants and a reading lounge make it easy to stay half a day. Tattoos not permitted.
Hakone Kowakien Yunessun
Two halves: the swimsuit spa zone 'Yunessun' and the traditional nude 'Mori no Yu'. Wine baths, coffee baths and water slides make it family-friendly and an easy first onsen for visitors. Tattoos allowed if covered with a sticker. Dynamic pricing in 2026: passport (both zones) from ¥3,500, swimsuit zone from ¥2,500, Mori no Yu only from ¥1,500.
Hakone Yuryo
Three minutes by free shuttle from Hakone-Yumoto. A farmhouse-style day spa whose 19 private open-air rooms are the draw (reserve ahead). The löyly sauna sessions in the main bath are popular too.
