The public bath for Arima’s clear “silver” water
Arima has two families of water: “Kinsen”, cloudy brown with iron and salt, and clear “Ginsen”. Gin-no-yu is the public bath dedicated to Ginsen — a carbonated spring and a radium spring — set on a rise near Onsenji temple and Nene Bridge at the back of the town. Tiny bubbles cling to your skin in the carbonated bath, aiding circulation; the radium spring was traditionally also inhaled. Pairing it with Kin-no-yu (Kinsen) via the ¥1,200 two-bath ticket to compare both waters is the classic Arima day trip.
Tips & cautions
- The ¥550 weekday rate excludes peak periods; peak weekdays are ¥700.
- On weekdays the two-bath ticket equals the sum of singles (¥550 + ¥650 = ¥1,200), so it only saves money on weekends and peak days.
- Kin-no-yu (closed 2nd/4th Tue) and Gin-no-yu (closed 1st/3rd Tue) alternate, so one is always open on Tuesdays.
- Indoor only, no rotenburo; quieter than Kin-no-yu.
- On a rise: a 5-min climb from the main street. The free foot bath is beside Kin-no-yu.
Getting there
About 10 min on foot from Kobe Electric Railway Arima-Onsen Station (Arima-cho 1039-1, beside Onsenji temple); 5 min from Kin-no-yu. Direct highway buses from Osaka and Kobe to the Arima Onsen bus terminal.
Before you go
- Tattoos are explicitly not allowed, even if covered.
- As a communal bath there is no soap or shampoo — bring your own or buy at the shop.
- Payment is usually by ticket machine in cash — bring coins.
- Last entry is 30–60 minutes before closing.

Gosho-no-Yu (Kinosaki outer bath)
The most popular of Kinosaki's seven public baths. In a building modeled on the Kyoto Imperial Palace, a waterfall rotenburo faces the hillside and a glass-roofed 'sky bath' sits indoors, all renovated in 2020. Overnight guests get free entry with the 'Yumepa' pass, so evenings are busy with yukata-clad bathers — go at 7 am when it opens.
Kin-no-Yu
The public bathhouse of Arima, one of Japan's three oldest hot springs. For ¥800 you can soak in the 'kinsen' — iron- and salt-rich water that turns rusty brown on contact with air, in pools at 42°C and 44°C. Under an hour by train from Kobe or Osaka, so an easy day trip. Free foot bath and drinking fountain outside. No tattoos.
Ichi-no-Yu (Kinosaki outer bath)
Kinosaki's flagship outer bath, praised as 'the best under heaven' by an Edo-period physician. Its cave bath carved into rock is the draw; the kabuki-theatre-style building is the town's landmark.
