Sakakibara Onsen was praised in the 11th-century Pillow Book as one of Japan's three finest baths. Tucked in the hills of Tsu, it flourished as a purification stop for pilgrims to Ise Shrine and is known as a 'beauty bath'. The day-use wing of this old ryokan lets you feel the silky pH 9.6 house spring unheated in the dedicated 'gensen' tub. ¥1,000 (face towel included, 2-hour limit).
