A long-established inn on the southern rim of the Yufuin basin. Its vast 'Gomusō-no-yu' open-air bath looks straight at Mt. Yufu across the valley. Day-use reception is short (10 am–2 pm), but on weekdays you may have it to yourself.

A 150-tatami rotenburo with Mt Yufu all to yourself
Musouen, the “mountain hotel” on the Kawaminami heights south of Yufuin, has the town’s most famous view bath. The women’s “Kukai-no-yu” is a giant ~150-tatami rotenburo facing Mt Yufu’s twin peaks head-on, and the men’s “Gomuso” and “Kobo” baths open the same way. Day bathing is short — reception 10:00–14:00, out by 14:30 — so plan around lunchtime. Each weekday one bath closes for cleaning; see the table above.
Tips & cautions
- The women’s bath is the largest with the best view; on some days only one of the two men’s baths is open.
- Cleaning days are discounted to ¥700 but that bath is closed.
- Family baths: no booking — check the door for vacancy; families/groups only.
- Bring towels (buying is pricey). Availability can change suddenly for filming or winter conditions — phone 0977-84-2171 just before visiting.
- 25 min uphill on foot from Yufuin Station, or 5 min by taxi.
Getting there
About 5 min by taxi or 25 min on foot from JR Yufuin Station (Kawaminami 1243); ~10 min from Yufuin IC. Free parking.

Takegawara Onsen
Founded in 1879, with its 1938 wooden building and curved gable, Takegawara is the symbol of Beppu Onsen. A regular bath costs ¥300 — a deep, hot pool down a flight of steps. The famous sand bath has you buried in warm sand by staff while wearing a yukata. Bring your own soap and shampoo.
Hyotan Onsen
A large complex where you can try Kannawa's specialties — waterfall bath, sand bath and steam bath — in one place. It once earned three Michelin stars and is used to overseas guests. Many private family baths; tattooed visitors are directed to these. A restaurant serves hell-steamed dishes. Open until 1 am.
Shitan-yu at Lake Kinrin
A thatched communal bath on the shore of Lake Kinrin. Unstaffed — drop ¥300 in the box at the door. Changing area and bath share one room; an indoor pool and a half-open pool facing the lake, and it is mixed bathing with clear water and little screening, so it's a challenge for women. Right in busy central Yufuin, but quiet at the 10 am opening.
