A solitary forest inn five minutes by car from central Kurokawa, where the only sound is the headwaters of the Chikugo River. On roughly 10,000 m² of grounds sit the mixed open-air Moyai-no-yu and the women-only Shiki-no-yu, fed free-flowing from two private springs; the indoor bath has a faint blue tint. Day use covers the open-air baths only, 08:30–21:00, ¥600 for adults, and Kurokawa's 'nyūtō tegata' bath-hopping pass (¥1,500 for three baths) is accepted, so pairing it with inns in the village is the classic plan. There is a free rest corner after bathing. Closures are irregular — phone ahead.

A secluded forest inn on 3,000 tsubo, away from the village
Ryokan Sanga is a member inn of the Japan Association of Secluded Hot Springs, hidden in cedar forest about 1.7 km down the old Oguni road from Kaze-no-ya at the western edge of Kurokawa. A stream runs through its ~3,000-tsubo grounds, dotted with seven baths — open-air, indoor and private — all fed 100% free-flowing from two private sources. Day visitors use the men’s open-air “Moyai-no-yu” (bluish clear water, with a cascade) and the women’s streamside “Shiki-no-yu”; its distance from the village keeps crowds thin. Moyai-no-yu was once mixed but is now men-only.
Tips & cautions
- 20–25 min downhill on foot from the village centre (uphill back); 5 min by taxi. Make it the last stop of your Tegata round and taxi back.
- No showers or soap at the open-air baths; wash elsewhere. Cold walk from changing room in winter.
- The women’s Shiki-no-yu is modest in size; men’s and women’s baths are far apart — follow the signs.
- Busiest 11:00–15:00; quietest right after opening at 8:30.
- Price rose from ¥500 to ¥600 in Oct 2023 (older reviews quoting ¥500 are outdated).
Getting there
About 25 min on foot or 5 min by taxi from the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop (Manganji 6961-1). By car ~45 km from Hita IC via Routes 212 and 442. Parking for 30.

- No official tattoo policy is published — ask at reception.
- There is a mixed-gender area. Check the description for bathing garments and women-only hours.
- Ryokan day-use hours are limited and may be suspended in peak season — phone the same morning.
- Payment is usually by ticket machine in cash — bring coins.
- Last entry is 30–60 minutes before closing.

Kurokawa Onsen Nyuto Tegata (bath-hopping pass)
One cedar 'nyuto tegata' pass (¥1,500) admits you to any three of the rotenburo at Kurokawa's 26-odd ryokan. Valid for six months, and one of the three stickers can be spent on food or souvenirs instead. Most inns accept bathers roughly 8:30–21:00, but hours vary and some close for cleaning or when full. Buy the pass at any ryokan or the association office 'Kaze no Ya'.
Ana-yu communal bath
A tiny bath hut on the Tanohara River, rebuilt by donations in 2022 after the 2020 floods (now separate men's and women's rooms). Slide the shutters open and it becomes almost open-air. ¥200 in the box.
Jizō-yu (Kurokawa communal bath)
The oldest communal bath in town, next to the Jizō hall that gives Kurokawa its identity. Not covered by the bath-hopping pass, but only ¥200. No soap; the water runs hot.
