Gero’s cheapest onsen — a neighbourhood bathhouse
Sachinoyu is a public bath attached to the Sachinoyu inn, less a tourist facility than a locals’ sento. Yet the water is genuine Gero onsen, and seven baths — rotenburo, waterfall, hydro, sauna and more — cost just ¥500 (¥680 with sauna), the best value in town. Since January 2026 the sauna is a separate wristband charge. With a tiny staff, it shortens hours or closes for private groups when training camps stay at the inn, so check the monthly calendar on Instagram (@happy_onsen) before you go.
Tips & cautions
- No soap, shampoo or towels at all — bring your own (or buy from the machine).
- Beyond Tuesdays and the 4th Monday, ad-hoc closures and short days (13:00–17:00) are common; it even closed under an evacuation order in Sept 2026.
- Entry may be limited on holidays. Park only while bathing.
- Opens 12:00 weekdays (11:00 weekends/holidays); last entry 20:30.
- Buy the ¥680 wristband only if you want the sauna; otherwise ¥500 suffices.
Getting there
About 4–10 min on foot from JR Gero Station (Koda 1144). By car: from the Taiunbashi junction on Route 41, turn left at Gero Ohashi bridge, then right at the first crossing, 200 m. Free parking for 20–25.
Before you go
- No official tattoo policy is published — ask at reception.
- As a communal bath there is no soap or shampoo — bring your own or buy at the shop.
- Payment is usually by ticket machine in cash — bring coins.
- Last entry is 30–60 minutes before closing.

A public bath in the heart of Gero, one of Japan's three famous springs. The alkaline simple spring (pH over 9) leaves skin silky — the classic 'beauty bath' — for just ¥470. Indoor pool only, popular with locals. Combine it with the ¥1,500 'yumeguri' pass that admits you to three ryokan baths. 10 minutes on foot from Gero Station.
Hirayu-no-Mori
The largest day-use facility in Okuhida. Sixteen open-air pools (7 men's, 9 women's) scattered through the forest, all fed directly from the source. Hida beef restaurant on site. The classic stop after Kamikochi or Shin-Hotaka.
Kur Garden Open-air Bath
A public bath that is entirely open-air, on the Hida River. No indoor pool — six outdoor tubs including a waterfall shower, box steam and pot baths. Gero's silky pH 8.9 water with a river breeze.
