Shinhotaka-no-yu is a big mixed rotenburo on the Gamata riverbed, reached by steps beside the bridge at the Nakao-Kogen entrance to Shinhotaka Onsen, and counted among Okuhida’s finest scenic baths. Soaking right beside the roaring rapids while gazing up toward Mt Yari and Mt Kasa is an openness hard to match. It is unattended, run by the tourist association for a ¥300 donation, and open only from late April, once the snow melts, to 30 October. Swimsuits and bathing wraps are permitted, so women and foreign visitors find it approachable despite being mixed.
Tips & cautions
- 2026 season 18 Apr–30 Oct, 8–18. Cleaning Mon & Fri (unusable Mon 13–15). Closed in high water.
- Fully visible from the bridge and road — a swimsuit or wrap is strongly advised (¥350 nearby).
- The water is mild; autumn evenings get cold. No washing — soak only.
- No washing area or lockers; mind valuables. Bring a towel.
- Handy combo: soak here, then wash properly at Nakazaki Sanso across the river (3 min).
Getting there
Nohi bus toward Shinhotaka Ropeway to “Nakao-Kogen-guchi”, right there (Kamisaka); ~87 min from Takayama, ~30 min from Hirayu. ~70 min by car from Takayama IC. A few free spaces nearby or the ropeway car park.

A public bath in the heart of Gero, one of Japan's three famous springs. The alkaline simple spring (pH over 9) leaves skin silky — the classic 'beauty bath' — for just ¥470. Indoor pool only, popular with locals. Combine it with the ¥1,500 'yumeguri' pass that admits you to three ryokan baths. 10 minutes on foot from Gero Station.
Hirayu-no-Mori
The largest day-use facility in Okuhida. Sixteen open-air pools (7 men's, 9 women's) scattered through the forest, all fed directly from the source. Hida beef restaurant on site. The classic stop after Kamikochi or Shin-Hotaka.
Kur Garden Open-air Bath
A public bath that is entirely open-air, on the Hida River. No indoor pool — six outdoor tubs including a waterfall shower, box steam and pot baths. Gero's silky pH 8.9 water with a river breeze.
