The bath of a 400-year-old inn beloved by writers
Funaya, founded around 1627, is Dogo’s oldest inn; Natsume Soseki frequented it while writing Botchan and Masaoka Shiki composed haiku here. Day bathers use either the ancient-cypress “Hinoki-yu” or the Oshima-granite “Mikage-yu” (sides swap monthly), each with an indoor bath and a garden rotenburo. At ¥1,800 it costs more than the three public baths, but towels and amenities are free and it is rarely crowded — ideal for a quiet, unhurried soak. Also open early, 5:30–9:30.
Tips & cautions
- Day bathing may be suspended when the inn is full — phone 089-947-0278 before visiting.
- Quietest from 11:30 into early afternoon; busier after 15:00 check-in.
- The garden foot bath is free even without bathing.
- Towels provided, so come empty-handed; gentle water suits infants.
Getting there
About 3 min on foot from the Dogo Onsen tram stop (Dogo-Yunomachi 1-33), 3 min from the Honkan. By car ~25 min from Matsuyama IC via Routes 33 and 11; parking available.

Dogo Onsen Honkan
Built in 1894 and the first public bathhouse designated an Important Cultural Property, the Honkan is Dogo's symbol. Full operation resumed in 2024 after a five-and-a-half-year restoration. The ground-floor 'Kami no Yu' is ¥700 for bathing only; upper floors add a rest room with tea. Soft alkaline water. Quietest right after the 6 am opening or after 9 pm.
Dogo Onsen Tsubaki-no-Yu
The locals' bath for anyone who wants to skip the Honkan queue. Same source water for ¥500 with almost no wait. Bring or buy soap.
Dogo Onsen Annex Asuka-no-Yu
An annex opened in 2017 in Asuka-period style with Ehime craftwork throughout, plus an open-air bath the Honkan lacks. Upstairs rest rooms and a private special bath limited to five groups a day.
