Yunohana huts and 300 years of tradition
Myoban Onsen is the highest of Beppu’s eight onsen areas (350 m), a sulfur field dotted with thatched “yunohana huts”. Inside, onsen steam is passed through blue clay on the floor and crystals of medicinal yunohana bath salts grow over about two months — a method dating from around 1725 and designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 2006. Touring the huts is free and the shop sells yunohana and cosmetics. The big open-air rock bath sits above the huts, letting you gaze down on Beppu Bay from milky-blue water.
Tips & cautions
- The women’s bath is at the end of a long corridor; the site has slopes and steps.
- The small indoor tub next to the rotenburo has more concentrated water — many prefer it.
- Hours vary by season and weather (some periods close at 18:00 on weekdays); phone ahead for evening visits.
- Stamp No. 59 on the Beppu Hatto Onsen-do and a Kyushu 88 Onsen site.
- Often combined with nearby Beppu Onsen Hoyoland (mud bath, mixed).
Getting there
From JR Beppu west exit, Kamenoi bus toward APU/Safari ~25 min to “Jizoyu-mae”, 1 min walk. About 10 min by car from Beppu IC; free parking.
Before you go
- With tattoos, use the private or family baths rather than the main bath.
- Payment is usually by ticket machine in cash — bring coins.
- Last entry is 30–60 minutes before closing.

Founded in 1879, with its 1938 wooden building and curved gable, Takegawara is the symbol of Beppu Onsen. A regular bath costs ¥300 — a deep, hot pool down a flight of steps. The famous sand bath has you buried in warm sand by staff while wearing a yukata. Bring your own soap and shampoo.
Hyotan Onsen
A large complex where you can try Kannawa's specialties — waterfall bath, sand bath and steam bath — in one place. It once earned three Michelin stars and is used to overseas guests. Many private family baths; tattooed visitors are directed to these. A restaurant serves hell-steamed dishes. Open until 1 am.
Shitan-yu at Lake Kinrin
A thatched communal bath on the shore of Lake Kinrin. Unstaffed — drop ¥300 in the box at the door. Changing area and bath share one room; an indoor pool and a half-open pool facing the lake, and it is mixed bathing with clear water and little screening, so it's a challenge for women. Right in busy central Yufuin, but quiet at the 10 am opening.
