Photos and social media at onsen — where you may shoot and where you never may
From the changing room onward, no camera and no phone. Keep that one rule and onsen towns, foot baths, in-room baths and private baths are all yours to photograph — with tips for good shots.
1. Strictly forbidden areas
- Changing rooms and bath areas: not even when empty. Just carrying a phone in gets you a warning
- Waterproof phone cases in the tub: also no
- Camera-equipped smartwatches: take them off
- Caught, you're out; serious cases go to the police under nuisance-prevention ordinances
- Same in mixed baths. 'Only I'm in the picture' is not accepted
2. Where photos are fine

3. How to ask
'Yokujō no shashin o totte mo ii desu ka? Dare mo inai toki ni.' = May I photograph the bath, when nobody's there?
If they say no, drop it. Use the official website or brochure photos instead.
4. Tips for good shots
- Steam is best in the morning and in winter — the colder, the thicker (Beppu Kannawa, Kusatsu Yubatake, Nozawa)
- Yukata plus stone steps or bridges: Kinosaki's willow-lined canal, Ikaho's stone stairway, Shibu's cobbles, Ginzan's Taishō-era buildings
- In-room baths: the 15 minutes of dusk, just before the lights come on
- Foot baths: shoot from above or feet only
- Meals: the moment they arrive, no flash; don't interrupt the attendant's explanation
- Turn off location tags or keep them to the town name; never post your room number
5. Video and live streaming
- Video in the bath area is obviously out. Even in the streets, live streams catch strangers' faces and many tourism boards ask you to refrain
- Drones are banned across virtually every onsen town (dense housing, tourist zones)
- Vlogging in ryokan corridors: keep quiet and keep other guests and room numbers out of frame
- Commercial shoots (PR, advertising) need advance approval from the inn and tourism association; unauthorised footage will be asked down
