Getting to onsen towns — rail passes, direct buses or a rental car?

Eight in ten major onsen towns are 'shinkansen plus a 30–60 minute bus'. You often don't need the nationwide JR Pass — regional passes or highway buses are cheaper. Best option per town, in a table.

1. Do you need the nationwide JR Pass?

Since the 2023 price rise the 7-day pass costs ¥50,000. A Tokyo–Kyoto return (about ¥28,000) plus a side trip doesn't cover it. For onsen travel it pays only if:
