A day spa (formerly Aoidake-sō) rebuilt as the centrepiece of Aoidake Nature Park in the Sakai River valley between Miyazaki and Miyakonojō. The alkaline simple spring, once picked among Japan's 'top ten viscous waters', has a silky feel; besides the main bath there are a walking bath, an electric bath, an open-air bath facing the green gorge and a sauna. The optional thermal lounge 'Yurukotto' adds bedrock-bath rooms and recliners for a long stay. Adults ¥700 on weekdays, ¥900 on weekends and holidays (¥1,000 on special days; discounts 07:00–10:00 and after 19:00); baths open 07:00–21:30, every day apart from inspection closures. An RV park, campsite and river-play spots sit alongside, ideal for a family outdoor day. 15 minutes on foot from JR Aoidake Station (pick-up available); about 15 minutes by car from Tano IC.

An hour by car from Miyazaki, a resort hotel on a rise in Kitago, Nichinan, ringed by cedar-clad hills. The silky bicarbonate water (around pH 9.5) is known as a 'beauty bath', and the rotenburo looks across the mountains and Nichinan farmland. Day bathing runs a generous 10:00–22:00 — easy to combine with Obi castle town or Udo Shrine. ¥1,200.
Kyomachi Onsen Gyokusenkan
A ryokan founded in the early Taishō era, five minutes on foot from Kyomachi-Onsen Station at the foot of the Ebino plateau. Every tub is free-flowing simple spring water, and a day soak costs just ¥300. Highlights are a cave-style private bath (¥500/hour) and an atmospheric open-air bath that alternates men/women after 18:00. A hidden gem 40 minutes by car from Kagoshima Airport on the way to the Kirishima range.
