Five 3-day onsen itineraries — Kusatsu, Beppu, Kinosaki, Noboribetsu, Nyuto

Realistic routes from major airports and shinkansen stations, with where to day-bathe and where to sleep.

1. From Tokyo — Kusatsu + Ikaho (Gunma)

Day 1 Tokyo → Kusatsu (shinkansen + bus, about 3 h). Stroll the Yubatake, sunset at Sainokawara rotenburo. Sleep in Kusatsu.

Day 2 Morning 'awase-yu' at Otakinoyu. Bus to Ikaho (about 1.5 h), climb the stone steps, bathe at Ishidan-no-yu. Sleep in Ikaho.

Day 3 Shibukawa Station → Tokyo, 2 h.

2. From Fukuoka — Beppu + Yufuin + Kurokawa (Kyushu)

Day 1 Hakata → Beppu by Sonic limited express (2 h). Sand bath at Takegawara, Hyotan Onsen in Kannawa. Sleep in Beppu.

Day 2 Bus to Yufuin (1 h). Shitan-yu by Lake Kinrin, wander the main street. Sleep in Yufuin.

Day 3 Bus to Kurokawa (1.5 h). Three rotenburo on a nyuto tegata pass. Evening bus to Fukuoka Airport (2.5 h).

3. From Osaka/Kyoto — Kinosaki + Arima (Kansai)

Day 1 Kyoto → Kinosaki by limited express (2.5 h). Yukata-clad crawl of the seven outer baths. Sleep in Kinosaki (baths free for guests).

Day 2 More outer baths in the morning; afternoon train to Kobe-Sannomiya and on to Arima (3.5 h total). Kin-no-yu. Sleep in Arima.

Day 3 Bus Arima → Osaka Umeda, 1 h.

4. From New Chitose Airport — Noboribetsu + Jozankei (Hokkaido)

Day 1 Airport → Noboribetsu (JR + bus, 1.5 h). Walk Jigokudani, day-bathe at Dai-ichi Takimotokan. Sleep in Noboribetsu.

Day 2 JR to Sapporo (1 h 20). See the city, then bus to Jozankei (1 h). Sleep in Jozankei.

Day 3 Morning at Jozankei Hotel's big bathhouse, then back via Sapporo to the airport.

5. Via Akita shinkansen — Nyuto Onsen (Tohoku)

Day 1 Tokyo → Tazawako by Akita shinkansen (3 h), bus to Nyuto (50 min). Sleep at Tsurunoyu or Kuroyu.

Day 2 Use the guests-only 'yumeguri' pass to visit the baths of all seven inns. Second night.

Day 3 Loop Lake Tazawa and head home.
