Onsen day trips from Tokyo and Osaka — under three hours round trip, with real costs
If you're giving one city day to onsen, 90 minutes each way is the limit. Eight from Tokyo and seven from Osaka with times, fares and bath fees, plus half-day models.

From Kyoto, Arashiyama (Kyoto Station → 30 min, Arashiyama Onsen Fufu-no-yu ¥1,000–1,400) is also an easy day out.
3. Half-day models
Tokyo – Hakone: Shinjuku 9:00 Romancecar → Hakone-Yumoto 10:30 → Hakone Yuryo (free 3-min shuttle) until 12:30 → soba on the Yumoto shopping street → 14:00 train, back by 16:00. About ¥9,000.
Osaka – Arima: Umeda 10:00 Hankyu bus → Arima 11:00 → Kin-no-yu → carbonated senbei → Nene Bridge → 14:00 bus → Umeda 15:00. About ¥4,500.
Tokyo – Atami: Tokyo 9:00 Kodama → Atami 9:45 → station arcade → hotel day bath (from 12:00) → dried-fish lunch → 15:30 Kodama → back 16:20. About ¥12,000.
4. Five rules for a successful day trip
- Ryokan day use is mostly 11:00–15:00 — plan a morning arrival
- Weekends bring more 'no day use' days. Go midweek or choose public baths (sotoyu, municipal)
- Bring your own towel (saves ¥200–400 rental)
- Reserve limited-express seats both ways in advance (return unreserved cars fill up)
- Leave luggage at your hotel. Station lockers cost ¥400–700
5. When staying over is the better deal
Kinosaki, Shirahama and Kusatsu cost over ¥10,000 in return fares alone. Add a weekday room with two meals (from ¥15,000) and it's still cheaper than two day trips — and you get the baths at night and dawn. Check weekday rates via Agoda and Trip.com on each onsen-town page here before deciding.
