Twelve best snow-view open-air baths — where and when snow is guaranteed

Winter alone doesn't guarantee snow. Reliable cover is mid-January to end of February, on the Sea of Japan side or above 700 m. Twelve baths ranked by certainty.

1. Conditions for guaranteed snow

Timing: 10 January to end of February. December is hit-and-miss; early March works only in Tohoku and Hokkaido
Region: Sea of Japan side (Niigata, Yamagata, Akita, Aomori), inland Hokkaido, northern Nagano, northern Gifu
Altitude: above 700 m even the Pacific side can deliver (Kusatsu 1,200 m, Manza 1,800 m, Zao 880 m)
Don't expect snow in Hakone, Atami, Izu, Beppu or Yufuin

3. What to wear and bring

The path to the bath is ice. Bring grippy sandals or go carefully barefoot rather than trusting inn slippers
Hair freezes. Wrap a towel around your head (keep it out of the water)
The coldest moment is stepping out. Leave your bath towel at the outdoor exit, not in the changing room
Glasses freeze rather than fog. Contacts or bare eyes

4. Getting there

Nyūtō, Sukayu and Okukinu have only a few buses a day. Book the inn's shuttle
Rental cars need 4WD and studless tyres. If you're not used to snow, take rail plus bus
Heavy snow cancels trains and closes roads. Leave a day's buffer either side
The Akita Shinkansen (Tazawako), Yamagata Shinkansen (Ōishida) and Hokuriku Shinkansen (Iiyama, Nagano) are the gateways

5. Stay overnight if you can
