The onsen year, month by month — what to aim for and which dates to avoid
The same onsen is a different place each month. Crowds, prices, scenery and water temperature by month, plus how to dodge Japan's three peak seasons.
1. Dates to avoid at all costs

Weekdays, especially Tuesday to Thursday, are 30–50% cheaper for the same room.

3. How the water changes with the season
- Temperature: free-flowing springs feel hotter in winter and milder in summer. Nozawa and Kusatsu stay above 44°C even midwinter
- Volume: snowmelt (Mar–May) dilutes some springs; autumn is when they're most concentrated
- Comfort outdoors: air at 10–18°C (April, Oct–Nov) lets you soak longest
- Milky water: sulfur springs turn whiter the colder it gets
4. Seasonal events to pair with a bath
- Feb: Yunishigawa and Yokote (Akita) snow-hut festivals
- Mar–Apr: cherry blossom runs Kawazu (late Feb) → Atami → Hakone → Kinosaki
- Jul–Aug: fireworks (Atami holds a dozen a year, mostly summer), Gero Onsen Festival (early Aug)
- Oct–Nov: foliage, crab, new rice and new sake
- Dec–Jan: Zao ice monsters (Jan–Feb), sake in the snow
5. A four-day February model
Tokyo → Akita Shinkansen to Nyūtō (night 1, Tsurunoyu) → Yamagata for Ginzan (night 2) → Zao for ice monsters and skiing (night 3) → Yamagata Shinkansen home. The classic all-snow route. Book by December.
