Mixed bathing today — where it still exists, and the rules on bathing wear and towels
Mixed baths keep disappearing; most survivors require bathing wear or set women-only hours. The rules to know before you go, plus beginner-friendly options.
1. Where mixed bathing stands
- A tradition surviving mainly in remote inns and old cure-bath towns; almost none in cities
- Local ordinances separate sexes from age 10 (7–12 depending on region), but mixed baths are exempt
- Many venues have switched to allowing yuamigi (bathing wear) or wrapped bath towels
- Nearly all set women-only hours (e.g. 19:00–20:00)
2. Three dress-code types
| Type | Rule | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Nude only | No towels or bathing wear — the traditionalists | Some cure baths and communal baths |
| Bathing wear / towel allowed | Women rent (¥300–500) or bring their own yuamigi | Tsurunoyu, Sukayu (now allows bathing wear), many large open-air baths |
| Bathing wear required | Both sexes wear it; swimsuits not allowed | Manza Hōrei-no-yu, some newer open-air baths |
Check the 'mixed' tag and bathing-wear note on each facility page. Swimsuits are banned virtually everywhere.
3. Beginner-friendly mixed baths
- Nyūtō Tsurunoyu (Akita): milky water hides everything; a passage leads from the women's bath straight into the mixed outdoor pool
- Sukayu Hiba Sennin-buro (Aomori): steam and sheer size. Women-only 8:00–9:00 and 20:00–21:00
- Hōshi Onsen Chōjukan (Gunma): mixed main bath with women-only hours; mostly overnight guests
- Manza Hōrei-no-yu (Gunma): bathing-wear rental, milky water
- Kurokawa Yamamizuki and parts of Kurokawasō (Kumamoto): outdoor bath only mixed, women-only hours
- Jigokudani Kōrakukan (Nagano): outdoor bath mixed, indoor baths separate. Monkeys drop by
4. Etiquette
- Towels stay out of the water (bathing wear is fine)
- Don't stare, don't start conversations, don't linger. Go alone or as a couple, quietly
- When a woman enters, men turn away or avert their eyes — the unwritten rule
- Photos and video are absolutely forbidden. Leave your phone in the changing room
- Keep soaks to 10–15 minutes so you're not mistaken for a 'wani' (a man who lurks waiting for women)
5. Tips for women
- Aim for women-only hours, or go with a partner or group
- Choose milky sulfur springs; clear-water mixed baths are for the experienced
- Bring your own bathing wear for peace of mind (¥2,000–4,000 online, one-piece style)
- Pick inns where the women's bath connects directly to the mixed outdoor pool (Tsurunoyu, Sukayu)
- If anyone makes you uncomfortable, leave and tell the front desk — inns do act
